DUBLIN, IRELAND (August 19, 2013)—A strong first half led the Sacred Heart women's basketball team to their third straight win in Ireland 78-51 over DCU Mercy in Dublin. Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) led the team putting 21 points on the board, while rookie Victoria Blackburn (Hershey, Penn.) had a good performance totaling 12 points while shooting 60% from the field.
The Pioneers came out strong in the first half, holding DCU Mercy to just 12 points in the first quarter, while SHU went on to light up the board with 23 points. Junior Washington accounted for more than a quarter of Sacred Heart's scoring in the 10-minute period with six going 2-for-2 from the floor and landing one from the charity stripe.
Freshman Blackburn came out strong in the second quarter, scoring ten points shooting .666 (4-for-6), as the Pioneers pressed on defense to hold DCU Mercy to just nine points. SHU outscored DCU 28-9 in the second for a 51-21 lead at the half.
After a sloppy third quarter that saw DCU Mercy close the gap, outscoring Sacred Heart 18-17, poor play continued into the fourth quarter. SHU only shot 13-for-42 in the second half of the game. DCU came out playing hard opening the final quarter with a six-point run while holding the Pioneers scoreless for nearly five minutes. SHU did manage 10 points in the final quarter to hold out for the win.
