Merriman Receives Fulbright Scholarship

Fairfield, Conn. (April 16, 2013)—Sacred Heart Women's Basketball and Women's Lacrosse senior Morgan Merriman (Seattle, Wa.) has received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach abroad after graduation. Merriman will be going to Albania to establish a girls basketball program, as well as teach introductory computer programming to boys and girls grades 5-9. She will primarily be working in Tirana, Tirana Communes and Durres.

"In Albania competitive sporting opportunities for girls have been limited," said Merriman. "My project addresses this situation by using my coaching and playing skills to encourage these young women to explore their athletic potential."

"We are extremely proud of Morgan's accomplishments during her four years at Sacred Heart and the Fulbright Scholarship is second-to-none," said Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Head Coach Ed Swanson. "Morgan has worked exceptionally hard in the classroom, on the court and in the community during her tenure and she is being rewarded for that. This is a distinguished honor that Morgan should be extremely proud of and will remember for the rest of her life. I think I can speak for her family, friends and teammates when I say we could not be happier for her!"

The core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program provides approximately 800 teaching and/or research grants to U.S. faculty and experienced professionals in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.  Grants are available in over 125 countries worldwide.
