Fairfield, Conn. (February 25, 2013)—Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) led the Sacred Heart Women's Basketball team to a 61-39 win over Central Connecticut Monday night with 22 points shooting 47.6% from the floor. Senior Morgan Merriman (Seattle, Wa.), in her last regular season home game, made eight-of-12 en route to 16 points as the Pioneers improved to 11-4 in the NEC.
Ericka Norman (Chino Hills, Calif.) flirted with another double-double after posting her first of the season on Saturday. The junior point guard posted 10 points and seven assists with five steals on the night.
Merriman got the dish from Norman and landed a jumper for the first bucket of the game. Two minutes later, Jessica Babe evened the score putting CCSU on the board with a layup. The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game nearly four minutes in on Kaley Watras's jumper.
After exchanging points, a 5-2 run in the middle of the first half boosted CCSU to a 18-12 lead, but the SHU chipped away, tying the game at 18 before taking the lead as part of a 19-2 run, which resulted in the 35-20 Pioneer lead going into halftime.
The Pioneers' run continued into the second half with Norman and Merriman combining for four points before the Blue Devils got off a shot. Didn't take long, however, for CCSU to answer with four of their own kicking off a seven-point run to close the gap, but it was never enough to catch the surging Pioneers.
CCSU's Jaclyn Babe racked up a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points.
Sacred Heart takes to the road for the final three games of the regular season, heading to Bryant on Wednesday and Brooklyn this weekend to face St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn.
