Second Half Run Boosts Pioneers Over LIU Brooklyn
Fairfield, Conn. (January 7, 2013)—With 12:17 left in the game, Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) landed a jumper kicking off a 17-0 run to boost the Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team over LIU Brooklyn, 61-47, Monday night in the William H. Pitt Center. The win improves the Pioneers are 9-5 for the season and 1-1 against Northeast Conference opponents.
Morgan Merriman picked up the second double-double of her career notching a game leading 20 points and pulling down 10 boards, shooting 61.5% (8-13) from the field.
Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) put the Pioneers' first four points on the board to put Sacred Heart up 4-2. LIU took their first lead of the night with a three-pointer, but Washington, en route to 12 points, and Blair Koniszewski (Vienna, Va.) landed back-to-back buckets to put SHU back on top 9-5.
The teams exchanged points throughout the remainder of the first half, the score tying on six more occasions.
With Sacred Heart down 22-18, Lerae Ettienne (Kensington, Md.) made back-to-back shots in the final minutes of the half, knotting the score at 22-22 heading into halftime.
The Blackbirds opened the second half with a three-pointer at the shot clock buzzer for the lead. The Pioneers came within one three times before Washington landed the jumper to give the Pioneers the lead they would not relinquish thanks to the 17-point rally that featured six points by Merriman.
Point Guard Ericka Norman (Chino Hills, Calif.) racked up 12 assists with just one turnover, and four steals on the night.
Sacred Heart hits the road next weekend. They start a four-game road trip on Saturday at noon in Hamden, Conn. against preseason favorite Quinnipiac.
