After playing three games on the road as part of the 2012 Preseason WNIT, the Pioneers finally come back to the William H. Pitt Center for the 2012-13 home opener. After falling to Liberty Saturday night 68-63, Sacred Heart is looking to rebound with a win over Saint Peter's. The Peahens will also be fighting though, as they are still in the hunt for their first win of the season. Gabrielle Washington and Ericka Norman were hot this weekend. Washington lit up the scoreboard with back-to-back 20-plus point performances (21 vs. Sam Houston State and 22 vs. Liberty). Norman had two consecutive 13-assist games over the weekend. On Friday against Sam Houston State, her 13 assists broke her personal career best, as well as breaking the assist record for the Vines Center at Liberty University, previously was 12.
Series Notes... Sacred Heart has won all five meeting with Saint Peter's since joining the Division I ranks in 1999. However, in the Division II days, the Peahens took four games from the Pioneers, winning two by 59 points. SHU is an even 2-2 against Saint Peter's in the William H. Pitt Center, having not lost to the Peahens there since the 1982-83 season.
Pioneers at Home... Sacred Heart has been extremely successful at home in the William H. Pitt Center. Since the Pitt Center opened in August of 1997, the women's basketball team posts an 81.5 winning percentage when at home (172-39). They had a perfect 14-0 home record in the 2003-04 season, and two years later did it again as part of the 2005-06 NEC Championship season. Last year, the Pioneers only dropped one home game.
Double Digits... Three Pioneers reached double-digit scoring in all three games this season. Something they are familiar with as last year, Sacred Heart had at least three players hit double-digits on 19 different occassions. Gabrielle Washington led the way, reaching double-digits in all three games, including consecutive 20-plus point games in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT against Sam Houston State and Liberty University. Kiley Evans, Morgan Merriman and Blair Koniszewski all reached the double-digit plateau in two out of the three games.
Helping Hands... Ericka Norman set a new career-high Friday night against Sam Houston State. The junior point guard eclipsed her previous high of 11 assists by two. Her 13 assists also set a new record for Liberty University's Vines Center. She followed it up with another 13-assist performance the next night against Liberty.
