Women's Hoops Picked Second in NEC Preseason Poll
Brooklyn, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2012)—The Northeast Conference announced that the defending NEC Champion Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team was picked to finish second in the 2012-13 Preseason Coaches' Poll at Media Day at the Barclays Center Tuesday morning. The Pioneers garnered four first place votes as the poll's runner-up. The only team above SHU was in-state rival Quinnipiac who earned seven first place votes.
"I think being picked second has a lot to do with our history, what we've done in the past, especially last year," said Head Coach Ed Swanson. "Being picked second is nice, but I think this team has the ability to improve a great deal, and a very high ceiling. Hopefully we'll reach that improvement level and be there again in March."
The Pioneers were picked third last season and went on to defeat Monmouth for their third NEC Championship.
2012 NEC Rookie of the Year Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) was honored with a spot on the Preseason All-NEC Team. Last year, Washington topped all rookies in the league averaging 12.5 ppg, while her 45.8 three-point shooting percentage led the league. The five-time Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week recorded five 20-plus point performances and started all but three games due to pneumonia.
Sacred Heart opens the season on November 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Georgetown in the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
