Pioneers' GPA Lands Them on WBCA's 2012 Academic Team Honor Roll

Fairfield, Conn. (July 17, 2012)--The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team succeeds in the classroom as well as on the court. Last year, the Pioneers combined for a 3.349 grade point average securing the No. 23 spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches' Associations 2012 Division I Academic Team Honor Roll.

"I am extremely proud of how hard our team not only performed on the court, but also in the classroom," said Head Coach Ed Swanson. "They are, in every sense of the word, true student-athletes."

Returning Pioneers, junior Blair Konszewski (Vienna, Va.) and senior Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) were named to the 2011-12 NEC Winter Commisioner's Honor Roll with GPA's of 3.75 or higher.

Earlier in the off-season, Callan Taylor (Overland Park, Kan.), who graduated in May with a degree in Exercise Science, was named the Northeast Conference Winter Scholar-Athlete for women's basketball. The small forward was also named to the Capital One/CoSida Academic All-Distric Team for the second year in a row.

Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls.
