Callan Taylor and Gabrielle Washington make headlines again; the duo pick up consecutive Northeast Conference weekly honors for another week. Taylor was named Co-Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and Washington picked as Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week.
Last week, Taylor (Overland Park, Kan.) shot over 60 percent from the field, and averaged 22.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists over two Pioneer wins. In the 80-55 victory over Saint Peter's on Thursday, the senior put 23 points on the scoreboard and pulled down seven rebounds, while shooting 71.4 percent from the field. Taylor had another 20-plus point game Sunday in the win over Cal Poly. She tallied 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the 89-69 win. This was the small forward's 43rd career double-double, a number that leads all active NCAA Division I players. Taylor currently ranks third amongst the NEC's leading scorers with 17.3 ppg, and second amongst rebounders with 9.9 per game.
Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) continues to have a hot hand, putting up double-digits in both games this week. The rookie shot 56.5 percent from the field and averaged 17 points per game in the 2-0 week. Against the Peahens at Saint Peter's, the guard put up 10 points in the 25-point win. She followed that with a career performance at home against Cal Poly on Sunday. In the 89-69 win Washington put up a career-high 24 points, her first collegiate 20-plus point performance, and the highest single-game scoring output of any NEC player that week. She went 10 for 15, including 4 for 6 from the three-point range in her 28 minutes on the floor. The 24-point performance boosts Washington's scoring average to 12.3 ppg and ranks her second amongst NEC rookies. Last week, she shot in incredible 71.4 percent from outside the arc.
