Callan Taylor and Gabby Washington led the Pioneers to a 7-1 record, the best start in program history, earning themselves this week's top Northeast Conference awards.
Taylor (Overland Park, Kan.) was named Choice Hotels Co-NEC Player of the Week, her third nod this year. Taylor continued her stellar season this week by picking up two double-doubles in as many games and came up one rebound short of a third. Leading the Pioneers to a three-win week, she lit up the board with 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds Monday night against NEC rival Quinnpiac. Despite not picking up a double-double against the Bobcats, Taylor still averaged a double-double for the week with 20.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. She put up 19 points, making 8-9 field goals, and securing 11 rebounds in the team's 55-33 triumph over Stony Brook. In the big 53-40 win over Central Connecticut State, Taylor knocked down 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. In those three games, she accounted for 33 percent of the team's scoring.
Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) picks up her third nod of the year as Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week. She had the hot hand, turning in double-digit points in all three wins. The freshman guard shot nearly 50 percent (18-37) from the field this week, and posted a career-high 17 points in her first taste of conference play against Central Connecticut, the team responsible for eliminating the Pioneers from the first round of the NEC Tournament in each of the last two years. She continued to perform against NEC rival Quinnipiac on Monday night, scoring 11 points in the 74-65 win. Earlier in the week, at home against Stony Brook, Washington shot 5-for-10 from the floor for 11 points and pulled down five boards.
