FAIRFIELD, CT (September 12, 2011) - Head coach Ed Swanson announced that the Sacred Heart women's basketball program has put together an 11-game non-conference schedule featuring match-ups against teams from the Atlantic-10, Patriot League, American East, MAAC and Ivy League in 2011-12.
"We have put together a challenging home and road non-conference schedule to prepare us for the rigors of the very tough Northest Conference play in the second semester," commented Swanson.
The season will tip-off on Friday, November 11th as the Pioneers pay a visit to Siena in the opener. The match-up with the Saints is the first of seven non-conference games the Pioneers will play away from home this season. SHU will visit two other schools from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as well this season, heading to Saint Peter's (Dec. 8th) and Mahattan (Dec. 30th). The Pioneers and Jaspers will meet in a re-match of their meeting in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), a 52-48 Manhattan win.
The Pioneers will open up at home in the William H. Pitt Center against the Ivy League's Columbia on Sunday, November 13th. The schedule has a pair of Patriot League opponents next up for the Pioneers as they host Lehigh on November 16th and travel to Colgate on November 22nd.
SHU will play host to Stony Brook to wrap up the month of November (30th) and welcome Cal Poly from the Big West Conference to Fairfield, Connecticut on December 11th. The game against the Mustangs marks the first time the Pioneers will face an opponent from the Big West.
The rest of the non-league slate is made up of road games at St. Joseph's (Nov. 26th), Albany (Dec. 18th) and St. Bonaventure (Jan. 3).
The 2011-12 NEC 18-game NEC schedule opens in December against a pair of Nutmeg State rivals. SHU heads to Central Connecticut State to open league play on December 3rd and make the quick trip to Quinnipiac on December 5th.
SHU will face every team twice with the exception of Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's and Wagner. The 2011-12 NEC slate is subject to change with the announcement of this season's league TV schedule.
