The Pioneer women's basketball team earned an invite and the fourth seed in the east region of the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational. Sacred Heart will travel to Manhattan for a 7:00 pm first round tip-off with the Jaspers Thursday, March 17. Sacred Heart is the first team from the Northeast Conference to compete in the WBI, a 16 team postseason event that was created in 2010.
Sacred Heart (18-12) will enter the tournament after falling 54-49 in the Northeast Conference Tournament quarterfinals. The Pioneers are 1-1 all-time versus the Jaspers with each team winning on its home floor. SHU knocked off Manhattan in 2009-10, inside the William H. Pitt Center, 64-45 behind Callan Taylor's (Overland Park, KS) 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Manhattan (22-9) played its last game March 5 in a 50-47 loss at the hands of Loyola in the MAAC Tournament semifinals. Abby Wentworth paces the Jaspers averaging 14.3 points per game in 2010-11 as well as earning a spot on the MAAC all-tournament team. The Pioneers will be anchored by Taylor, an All-Northeast conference first team selection, and Ericka Norman (Chno Hills, CA), who earned a spot on the NEC All-Rookie squad.
The Pioneers went a perfect 2-0 against teams from the MAAC this season, defeating both St. Peter's and Siena.
The winner of Sacred Heart and Manhattan will take to the road to face-off against either Wright State or Buffalo.
