Fairfield, CT – Even in the middle of the Northeast Conference schedule the Pioneer women's basketball team remains committed to the local community. Twice in January the players welcomed students from the RISE (Reaching Independence through Supported Education) program to Sacred Heart. The RISE program is a collaborative effort between the Cooperative Educational Services (CES) and SHU to help the students enhance vocational, social and personal management skills.
The interaction between students and SHU players began with lunch in the afternoon. The group exchanged personal stories and potential future goals that allowed them to connect on a personal level. After lunch the players came to the Pitt Center and provided students in the program with lessons on the basketball court.
The experience was genuinely enjoyed by all involved as the RISE students were a truly enthusiastic, fun and appreciative group. The participants in the program became fans and showed up at the next Pioneer home game to cheer on their new friends in a Northeast Conference contest. The Sacred Heart women's basketball team looks forward to staying involved in the RISE program in the future.
