FAIRFIELD, CT (September 22, 2012) - Sacred Heart grad student Rich Marcello (Foster, RI) and senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) finished second and third, respecitvely, to lead the Pioneers to a third place finish at the 36th Annual Fairfield University Victor F. Leeber Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers, who rested a few key runners this afternoon, finished a solid third behind host Fairfield and Rutgers. Marcello and Connelly each recorded seasonal best times in the race.
Marcello turned in a time of 26:18 on the 8k course, giving him a second place finish and his first career top-five finish. Connelly registered his third career top-five finish, running in third place with a time of 26:22.
Freshman Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY) finished 11th overall, the second highest finish by a rookie in Saturday's race. Ferguson clocked in with a time of 27:16.
Rounding out the Pioneers top-seven runners was senior Justin Britton (Bay Shore, NY) in 25th place (28:06), junior Colin Seidl (Cochecton, NY) in 29th (28:21), freshman Nicholas Haile (Merrick, NY) in 34th (28:41) and junior Kevin Schumann (Wayne, NJ) in 37th (29:02).
The Pioneer men's and women's cross country teams are back in action on October 7th when they run in the 100th New England Championship in Westfield, MA.
