BRONXVILE, N.Y. – Sacred Heart's Adrian Fernandez (San Juan, P.R.) and Ray Satagaj (Rocky Hill, Conn.) were named to the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) 2013 All-Academic Team, which was announced Tuesday afternoon. The team includes 10 student-athletes from six of the eight institutions.
Fernandez will graduate later this month with a degree in Finance and Economics and a GPA of 3.55. This season, the San Juan native has set his career-high of 57 kills and 31 assists. Over his four years as a Pioneers, he has racked up 431 digs and 75 kills over the course of his four years as a Pioneer. He made his collegiate debut on January 16, 2010 against Saint Francis U and has played in 78 matches since. In 2012 during his junior campaign, he recorded a career high of 2.27 digs per set. That year against NJIT, he set his single-match high of 21 digs.
In his first year as a Pioneer, Satagaj led the team with 56 total blocks, averaging 0.67 per set. The sophomore recorded 12 solo blocks and 44 block assists over 84 sets. He racked up a .249 hitting percentage, fourth on the team, and 129 kills, averaging 1.54 per set.
In order to be named to the team recipients must have participated in at least 60% of their team's sets, maintained a minimum of a 3.50 GPA, and must be in at least their second year of athletic eligibility.
George Mason led all teams with three student-athletes named to the team while NJIT and Saint Francis both had two student-athletes on the all-academic team. Harvard, Penn State, and Sacred Heart all had one student-athlete on the team.
