Newark, N.J. (February 21, 2012)—Junior Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) led the Sacred Heart Men's Volleyball team to their first Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association win Thursday night with 13 kills. The Pioneers swept Rutgers Newark, winning every set 25-23, to improve to 2-8 on the season and 1-4 in conference.
The score tied 14 times in the first set as the teams battled for the early advantage. Junior Jose Juelle (Guaynabo, PR) hit .667 with two kills on three attempts with no errors. With the score tied at 23, Borsay aced back-to-back serves to earn the 1-0 match lead.
The Scarlet Raiders took a fast 5-0 lead to open the second set, but the Pioneers chipped away to tie the game at eight and take the go-ahead point on back-to-back kills by Borsay. From there the score tied four more times in the close set. With Sacred Heart on set point, Rutgers Newark rallied two points to lessen the lead to 24-23, forcing Head Coach Kalani Efstathiou to call a time out. Raymond Satagaj burst out of the timeout with a kill giving the Pioneers another 25-23 win.
Adrian Fernandez (San Juan, PR) was a perfect with four kills on four attempts in the final set of the match, while Borsay hit .500 with three kills on six attacks. The third set was another battle, and just like the previous set, the Pioneers called a timeout on match point due to a short RNU rally. This time, Will LeClerc (Fairfield, Conn.) came out with the kill to clinch yet another 25-23 set.
The Pioneers take the court again Saturday evening at NJIT.
