Gaffney, SC - The SHU men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Limestone on the road Wednesday night. Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) recorded eight kills along with a .286 hitting percentage to lead the Pioneers. Jason Kinney (Salem, NH) chipped in two kills and two block assists in the loss.
Limestone (8-6) started the opening set strong, building an early 7-2 advantage following a block from Andrew Miller and Derek Daley. The Pioneers closed the gap to two at 13-11 after a Nick Hunt (Uniondale, NY) kill and a Limestone attacking errors. Hunt closed the match with a team high nine kills. However, the home team would end the set on an 11-4 spurt that secured a 25-17 triumph.
Sacred Heart (4-15) had to play catch-up throughout the second set but was able to keep Limestone within striking distance. The Pioneers took four-of-five points to regain the momentum and trail by only two at 23-21. The Saints were able to hold off SHU and notched a match high .381 hitting percentage in the frame. Scott Warren dropped in the kill that gave Limestone the second set, 25-22.
The third set followed the same pattern as the previous two with Sacred Heart closing an early Limestone edge in the middle stages of the set. Mackenzie ripped a kill that brought SHU within one at 11-10. The Saints engineered a 9-4 run to build a 20-14 cushion that would allow them to cruise to the finish line. Limestone earned the 3-0 victory with a 25-18 win in the third set.
The Pioneers close out a stint of three road matches in as many days tomorrow afternoon at Pfeiffer, game time is set for 3:00 pm
