Fairfield, CT – The Princeton Tigers fired on all cylinders Friday night to knock off the SHU Men's Volleyball Team, 3-0. John Lutjen (Smithtown, NY) led the Pioneers in both assists and digs with 33 and six, respectively. Nick Hunt (Smithtown, NY) paced the attack with 14 kills while Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) added ten kills of his own. The Tigers posted a .455 hitting percentage and 16 total blocks en route to the three set victory.
Princeton (2-2, 1-0 EIVA) took control of the match early, jumping out to a commanding 10-3 edge. The Tigers would finish the opening frame with a .522 hitting percentage with Scott Liljestrom notching 11 assists. The Pioneers would close the gap to three at 13-10 following a Mackenzie service ace. However, SHU would never get closer as Princeton sealed the first set, 25-20, on a Davis Waddell kill.
Sacred Heart (3-7, 0-2 EIVA) had an inconsistent second set as the home team recorded 15 kills as well as 11 hitting errors. The Tigers broke open a 5-5 tie with a 9-1 spurt that included five straight SHU miscues. Princeton was efficient throughout the middle set with 12 kills and zero errors, good for a .632 clip. Will Siroky secured the final point with a kill as the Tigers moved within one set of the victory after taking the second set, 25-20.
The Pioneers got off to a hot start in the third set, building an 8-3 advantage. However, Princeton rattled off the next five points and forced SHU to burn a timeout. The two sides then battled evenly throughout the rest of the set and found themselves level at 21-21. The Tigers' Cody Kessel then took over with three of his team high 13 kills in the final four rallies, including match point, to give the visitors the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
Sacred Heart returns to action tomorrow night for another EIVA match-up as George Mason comes to the William H. Pitt Center. Game time is set for 8:00 pm.
