W. LONG BRANCH, NJ (May 4, 2013) – The Sacred Heart men's track & field team opened the 2013 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday with a pair of top-five finishers in the discus in Junior Marck Troiani (Valhalla, NY) and sophomore John Wlasuk (Newtown, CT).
The Pioneers are in fifth place after the first day of competition, scoring 20 points in seven scored events. The defending champion and host Monmouth Hawks lead the field with 49 points after day one.
SHU's throwers got off to a solid start on Saturday with Troiani finishing second in the discus, followed by Wlasuk in fourth place. Troiani unleashed a throw of 167'01", easily erasing his previous top-throw this spring of 154'11" set at the Stony Brook Invite. Wlasuk measured out at 162'07".
Sophomore Scott Sheehan (Beverly, MA) scored in the javelin with an eighth place finish, registering a throw of 166'10". Junior Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY) took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21'8.25".
The Pioneer 4x800 relay team of senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY), grad student Richard Marcello (Foster, RI), sophomore Stephen McNicholas (Waldwick, NJ) and freshman Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY) finished sixth with a time of 7:54.18.
In the 400 meter dash, freshman Daniel Graw (Nesconset, NY) advanced to his first NEC final, qualifying for Sunday with a time of 49.25 seconds.
Junior Patrick Peterson (Gloversville, NY) earned a spot in the 800 meter finals on Sunday by posting a time of 1:53.96. Peterson won the 800 meters at this year's NEC Indoor Championship. He will also run in the 1,500 meter final on Sunday after qualifying with a time of 4:00.23. Peterson entered this weekend with the top-time in the conference in the 1,500 this spring.
The final day of competition gets underway Sunday morning at 9:45 am at Monmouth University.
