FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart junior distance runner Patrick Peterson (Gloversville, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The NEC Track Athlete of the Week award changes hands from one Constitution State rival to another - from a Central Connecticut sprinter to a Sacred Heart harrier. Contesting his first meet since returning from injury (his last race was the NEC Cross Country Championship), Peterson opened his indoor season by turning heads the Yale Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. The third-year Pioneer produced the fastest Mile time in the NEC thus far this season and was equally as impressive while running the anchor leg of Sacred Heart's IC4A-qualifying 4x800 relay performance. On his way to a 4:13.37 Mile, which is the second-fastest in SHU's program history, Peterson moved into the lead on the second lap of the race, and never looked back. Later in the day, Peterson posted the fastest 800m split of his fellow Pioneers as SHU completed the 4x800m relay in 7:50.12. Had he run it during an individual competition, his 1:51.60 split would be the top 800m time is the NEC thus far.
