New Haven, CT – The Sacred Heart University Track and Field teams participated in the Geigengack Invitational hosted by Yale University, with the women winning both the shot put and the weight throw events. The Pioneers finished with four of the top six in the shot put and four of the top five in the weight throw.
With a mark of 13.6 meters, Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) took home the win in the shot put for the Pioneers. Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT) finished in second place slightly behind Aponte with a mark of 12.78 meters. Rounding out the top six for SHU were Kolbi Smith (Valatie, NY) with a mark of 11.71 meters (fifth place) and Christi Middleton (Colchester, NY) with a mark of 11.02 meters (sixth).
Athalia Smith took home first place honors in the weight throw with an impressive mark of 18.17 meters, over one meter farther than every other competitor. Kolbi Smith finished in second place with a mark of 17.02 meters. Chantaul Smith (New Britain, CT) grabbed fourth place with a throw of 15.33 meters and Middleton rounded out the top five with a throw of 17.74 meters.
Joselyn Henry (Westport, CT) also put up a strong performance for Sacred Heart in the Women's Long Jump, finishing in seventh place with a leap of 5.12 meters. Another strong performer from the girls' squad was Brigid Paddock (Stony Brook, NY) also gave the Pioneers a strong performance with a sixth-place finish of 2:25.06 in the 800 meter.
The men were also most successful in the shot put and the weight throw events, recording two of the top ten in shot put and four of the top eight in weight throw. Philip Miccio (Jericho, NY) threw 13.95 meters to finish seventh in shot put. Scott Sheehan (Beverly, MA) finished just behind Miccio in ninth with a throw of 13.34 meters.
For the weight throw, Matt Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) tossed an impressive 16.1-meters to finish fourth. Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) came in right behind in fifth with a 15.54-meter throw. Rounding out the top eight were Chris Mahl (South Burlington, VM) in seventh and Miccio in eighth with tosses of 14.92 meters and 14.55 meters respectively.
Kevin Eckel (Haverford, PA) also led SHU in the 60 meter dash with a sixth-place finish of 7.12 seconds.
There were over 11 teams competing in the invitational with no team scoring.
