DeLoreto and Jean-Louis Named NEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year
FAIRFIELD, CT (May 12, 2011) - Sacred Heart senior Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ) and junior Bertony Jean-Louis (Norwalk, CT) were named the Northeast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year for Indoor Track & Field for the 2011 season. In addition to the scholar-athletes, the NEC also announced its winter Academic Honor Roll, with 93 student-athletes from SHU making the cut.
DeLoreto earns her second Scholar-Athlete honor and first in women's indoor track and field. DeLoreto won the 3,000 meters at the 2011 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships in February, crossing the tape in 10:07.46. She also collected All-NEC second team honors by finishing second in the 5,000 meters (17:18.65). DeLoreto was the 2010 NEC Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2009 NEC individual champion in cross country. She maintains a 3.92 grade point average majoring in Psychology.
Jean-Louis collects the NEC Scholar-Athlete award in men's indoor track and field. For the second year in a row, Jean-Louis set a new league record in the 60-meter hurdles at the NEC Championships. He crossed the tape in 7.98 seconds to also establish a new school mark. Jean-Louis also finished fourth in the 60-meters and ran a leg on Sacred Heart's second place 4x400 meter relay team. In early March, the Norwalk, CT native earned All-New England honors after placing second in the 60-meter hurdles with another program record time (7.89) at the New England Championships. He closed out his record-setting winter season by becoming just the fourth individual in school history to capture an individual title at the IC4A Championships. He was clocked in 7.79 seconds in his marquee event to take home All-East honors. Jean-Louis has posted a 3.49 grade point average and majors in Business.
The NEC Honor Roll consisted of 588 student-athletes, a 7.29 percent increase from last year. There were also 137 student-athletes - an 18.1 percent increase from a year ago - named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, which honors those with a 3.75 or better grade point average.
Making the Commissioner's Honor Roll from Sacred Heart were Nick Greenbacker (Coventry, CT) from men's basketball, Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) and Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, NY) from women's basketball, Erin Weinmann (Temple, PA) and Jacqueline Willy (Clarence, NY) from bowling, Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, NY) from swimming, Tyler Duhamel (Cumberland, RI), Scott Kasper (East Longmeadow, MA) and Matthew Lyhne (Wethersfield, CT) from men's indoor track & field and Elizabeth Brombacker (Wallingford, CT), Julianne Cappadona (North Attleboro, MA), Elizabeth Corvese (Portsmouth, RI), DeLoreto, Bonnie Kilis (Marlborough, CT), Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) and Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) from women's indoor track & field.
All scholar-athlete award winners must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team.
