Hamden, CT – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team put together a strong showing over the weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational at Quinnipiac University. A field of eight teams participated, including NEC rivals Bryant and QU. In-State schools UCONN and Hartford were also in attendance.
The most impressive performance of the weekend came from the doubles team of sophomore Justin Pagan (Flushing, NY) and junior Kevin Budrawich (New Canaan, CT). They ended up winning the "B" doubles flight, defeating four teams on their way to the title. The duo defeated three teams from Quinnipiac before taking down UCONN in the finals. Their toughest match of the weekend came against a QU team of Garrett Lane and Luke Roser in which the Pioneer duo came away with a hard fought 9-7 victory. In the finals the Pioneer pair took down a UCONN team 8-5.
Other notable performances from Sacred Heart came in singles action. Freshman Matt Dean (Newington, CT) earned a pair of wins in the "D" singles flight. Senior John Lopresti (Syosset, NY) also earned two victories in the "C" singles flight. Senior Mike Provenzo (Upper Montclair, NJ) and freshman Jeremy Shuskus (West Hartford, CT) both got a win each in the "B" singles flight.
The Pioneers will be on the court next on Thursday October 18 at the ITA East Regional Championships at Yale University.
