SHU Keeps Rolling With Matching 7-0 Wins Over Niagara and Fordham
FAIRFIELD, CT (April 10, 2011) - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team continued their recent hot streak on Sunday with a pair of 7-0 win s over visiting Niagara and Fordham to run their win streak to four-straight. The Pioneers improved to 13-7 this spring and have won nine of their last 11 dual matches heading into the final week of the season.
Senior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) continued to dominate finishing off the week with five singles victories at #1 to run his streak to 18-straight wins and counting heading toward the Northeast Conference Championships. He swept both of his singles matches on Sunday to help key the Pioneer's sweep of the the Purple Eagles and Rams.
Kasyanov beat Niagara's Matthew Kane, 6-2 and 6-0 and took down Fordham's Andriy Kulak, 6-2, 6-0 as well. He raised his singles record to 27-6 this season, improving to 18-2 when playing #1. Kasyanov also tacked another doubles victory on to his ledger, teaming with junior Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) for an 8-3 win over Kane and Mattieu Lacasse of Niagara at #1 doubles. He is tied for the team lead with 17 wins.
Senior Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) posted a pair of singles wins at #2, beating Brandon Gallegos, 6-0, 6-3 and Fordham's Austin Shoup, 6-2, 6-0. He has won his last four singles matches. Ujkic and senior Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) win at #2 doubles over Niagara's Lemieux-Sarassin and Joseph Zelic, 8-4. Syer and John Harvey teamed up for a #3 doubles win against the Rams, 8-4, over Austin Shoup and Alex Levine.
Senior Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) won a pair of singles matches on Sunday, beating Niagara's Joseph Zelic, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2 and Fordham's Ken Fukumoto, 6-0, 6-1. Syer won his #4 singles match against Niagara, beating Tedesco-Blair, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) won at the #4 slot against Fordham, beating Dane Kane-West , 6-1, 6-0. Conrad played at #6 in the Niagara match, beating Lemieux-Sarassin 6-0, 6-1. Conrad is 6-4 over his last 10 and has won four-straight.
Senior Jacob Miller (West Chesterfield, NH) beat Fordham's Nick Kelly, 6-2, 6-1. Miller and Sullo teamed up to deliver the doubles point by beating Alexander DeRienzo and Eli Plangger, 8-0. Junior Logan Mohring (Naples, FL) beat Alex Levine of Fordham, 6-0, 6-1. Mohring and Miller earned a doubles win against Niagara, beating Gallegos and Tedasco-Blair, 8-3.
Sullo earned a singles win against Niagara, beating Lacasse, 6-4, 7-6 at #5 and is playing some of his best tennis of the season, winning seven-straight and posting a 9-1 mark in his last 10. Sullo is 16-7 on the year, 11-3 at #5 singles.
SHU will host Saint Peter's on Tuesday in their final tune-up before next weekend's Northeast Conference Championship in West Windsor, NJ.
