FARIFIELD, CT (March 31, 2011) - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team notched their second-straight Northeast Conference victory on Thursday beating Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, on the Pioneer Tennis Courts. SHU is now 3-2 in NEC play and 8-6 overall.
The two team's split the six singles matches as SHU senior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) extended his winning-streak to 12-straight by dispatching Ibahim Shams, 6-1, 6-1, from his #1 slot. Kasyanov is now 21-6 on the season and 5-0 against NEC competiton in singles play.
Joining Kasyanov in the win column was junior Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) and senior Jacob Miller (West Chesterfield, NH). Sullo posted a 6-3 and 6-3 win over Andrew Denny at #5 and Miller beat Guy Goren at #6, 6-4, 6-2. Sullo has now won three-straight and improved to 4-1 against NEC teams. He is 8-2 over his last 10 matches. Miller continues to impress at #6 singles, improving to 5-2 on the year. He is 7-3 in his last 10 matches.
The Pioneers won the match by taking the doubles point, winning at #1 and #3. Kasyanov and Sullo beat Shams and Denny 8-5 at #1 and senior Jinal Shah (Mombassa, Kenya) and Miller teamed up for an 8-3 win over Skvarka and Gricheno.
The Pioneers three singles losses all came in three set battles. Senior Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) lost to Peter Skvarka, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at #2. Senior Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) lost to Yuri Gricheno, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at #3 and senior Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) fell to Mark Hemy, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8.
SHU will travel to Hartford on Saturday for a 4 pm match.
