DORADO, PUERTO RICO - The Sacred Heart men's tennis notched their second-straight win on their Spring Break trip to Puerto Rico battling Connecticut to a 5-2 win on Tuesday. The Pioneers took five of the six singles matchs for the win and have now won four of their last five dual matches to even their record at 4-4 on the season.
The Pioneers came up short in doubles play with UConn earning the point. SHU got a win at #3 from seniors Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) and Michael Syer (Oakville, Ontario) who beat Dave Adams and Jai Yoon, 8-6. The senior team of Jacob Miller (West Chesterfield, NH) and Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) lost a hard fought match at #3 to Wei Lin and Ricardo Cardona, 9-7.
SHU went to work in singles play and won four of the five matches in straight-sets. Senior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) won his sixth-straight singles match this spring, taking down Andrew Marcus, 6-3, 6-2 at #1. Mazzarese continued his winning ways as well, notching his fifth-straight singles win with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Yoon at #3.
Syer won at #4 beating Adams 6-3, 6-2 and Conrad hearned a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ryan Carr at #5 singles. Junior Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) closed out the SHU win at #6 singles with a win over Lin. Sullo won the first set, 6-4, and then rebounded in the third set with a 6-3 win.
The Pioneers close out their spring trip on Thursday by meeting Northeast Conference member Bryant for the second time this season. SHU lost a 4-3 battle with the Bulldogs back on February 26th.
