NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 19, 2011) - The Sacred Heart men's tennis team posted a pair of wins over the weekend, beating Army and Holy Cross. SHU edged the Black Knights on the road Friday night, 5-2, and shut out the Crusader on Saturday, 7-0 at Yale University. With the two wins, the Pioneers are now 2-3 in dual match play this Spring.
In the win over the Black Knights, the Pioneers took five of the six singles matches. Senior Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) started the run in singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #1 over Tripp Johnson. Kasyanov and teammate Chris Ujkic (Mattituck, NY) won their doubles match, 9-8 over Johnson and Rommel Verano but it was Army who would take the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3.
Senior Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) beat Henry Jang-Milsten at #3 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) won a three-set battle with Verano. Conrad won the first set 6-1, dropped the second 6-5 and rebounded in the third 6-0.
Junior Chadd Sullo (Orange, CT) defeated Joshua Cook at #5 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Jacob Miller (West Chesterfield, NH) closed out the win for the Pioneers with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 over Andrew Clark.
Kasyanov picked up his second win of the weekend by beating Holy Cross #1 Chris Das, 6-2, 6-0. Ujkic earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 over Ryan Sullivan. Mazzerese also earned his second win of the weekend with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chris Brosnan.
Senior Mike Syer (Oakville, Ontario) beat Connor McCann at #4, 6-1 and 6-0 and then teamed with Conrad for win at #2 doubles, 8-0, over AJ Shekar and Das. Grad student Jinal Shah (Mombassa, Kenya) beat Shekar, 6-0, 6-1 at #5 while freshman Luke Bagi (Branford, CT) closed out the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #6 over Scott Brownell.
Sullo and Miller clinched the doubles point with a win at #1 over Kevin Leggio and Sullivan, 8-2.
SHU takes on Bryant next Saturday, Feburary 26th hosting Bryant at Yale University.
