Men's Soccer Pushes Closer to Playoffs with 3-0 Win Over Quinnipiac
(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Men's Soccer team put themselves in position to earn a playoff berth with a 3-0 win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Friday night at Campus Field.
Justin Brewer (Somers, CT) opened the scoring in the ninth minute thanks a great one-time pop up pass by Brian Fancolini (Ellington, CT). Brewer settled down Francolini's nifty feed on the left side, and drove in the game's first goal from about 15 yards out. Omer Levy (Yahud, Israel) made it 2-0 SHU in the 34th minute, settling a cross off a free kick from Marcello Castro from about 30 yards out for a good look from left of the goal.
In the second half, Marcello Simoes (Ouro Fino, Brazil) capped off the scoring on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 69th minute, faking a pass to Castro before driving an insurance goal under the crossbar. The scoring proved to be more than enough for senior goalkeeper Alex Fait (Ottawa, ON), who made four saves in recording the 18th shutout of his career in his final regular season home game.
With the win, the Pioneers are now undefeated in their last eight games and could potentially claim the NEC regular season championship with one game left on Sunday afternoon at Bryant. With a win against the Bulldogs, Sacred Heart would finish with 21 points and be the number one seed in the upcoming NEC tournament. CCSU and Monmouth could also both finish with 21 points, but SHU owns the tie-breakers by virtue of wins against both teams earlier this year.
