FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Marcello Castro of the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team was named to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-America Third Team. Castro was one of three Northeast Conference players to earn a spot on the NSCAA All-America Team.
"Marcello being the first All-American at Sacred Heart on the Division I level is a great accomplishment and one that will help our program for the future," stated head coach Joe Barroso. "It is a tremendous honor to have an All-American in our program and we hope this honor will help to attract many more to Sacred Heart."
Castro, a sophomore defender from Parana, Brazil, is the sixth Pioneer to be named to an All-America team in program history. He is the first in the team's Division I era and first since 1992.
This postseason, Castro has been honored as an All-Regional NSCAA North Atlantic and All-Northeast Conference first teamer. He was also the NEC's Defensive Player of the Year. Castro was the Pioneers leading scorer with five goals to go with a pair of assists for a team-high 12 points, while playing in the central midfield.
"Marcello is defintely one of the top players in the Northeast Conference and one who has the potential to move on to the next level."
Castro will be honored along with the other All-Americas at the NSCAA Convention in Baltimore on January 15.
Previous Sacred Heart All-America selections include; Joe McGuigan (1970), Lawrence Taplah (1981-'82), Daniel Dos Santos (1990), and Allan Zuniga (1992).
