FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart men's lacrosse coach Jon Basti announced on Wednesday the four student-athletes chosen as captains for the upcoming 2014 season.
Seniors Jared Carrier (Crownsville,Md.), Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.), Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.), and Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) will be the team captains for 2014. Carrier and Newbold lead the Pioneers' defensive group into the new season. Newbold was a First-Team All-Northeast Conference Defender in 2013 after collecting 40 groundballs and causing a career-high 22 turnovers. He also scored three goals last season while playing in all 14 games. Carrier also played in all 14 games in 2013, causing four turnovers with 19 ground balls.
Mawdsley and Gannon look to lead the Sacred Heart attack in 2014. Gannon had a career year in 2013 for the Pioneers, leading the team with 37 assists and 44 points. Twenty-seven of his points came against NEC opponents. Mawdsley scored 26 goals in 2013, third-most on the team. He enters the season with 84 career goals and 96 career points.
"All four of these men have shown great leadership ability and have set a standard for the rest of the team on how they should play and how hard they should go," said Basti on the 2014 captains. "They lead by example, lead with encouragement, and are a vocal presence which inspires their teammates. As a group they hold themselves to a higher standard in every aspect which allows them to hold their teammates to the same standard."
"Their leadership off the field has been tremendous as well," Basti added. "Not only are all four great on the field, but they are also very good students and do a lot for our effort to serve the community as best we can. As a program, we are making an effort to do things the right way by holding ourselves and our teammates accountable and these men have demonstrated just that. We look forward to what they will bring to the table and where they can lead us."
