Pioneers Open NEC Play At Mount St. Mary's Saturday

Setting the Scene ... The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team opens Northeast Conference play at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday. This season, the winner of the NEC Tournament gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

All-Time Series vs. Mount St. Mary's ... The Mountaineers lead the all-time series against the Pioneers 6-0. Four of the six meetings have been decided by two goals or less, including Mount St. Mary's 9-8 win last season.

Last Time Out ... Sacred Heart rallied from a three-goal fourth quarter deficit last Saturday to force overtime against Vermont at Campus Field, but lost in overtime 8-7. Senior midfielder Shane Foley tallied a career-high three goals and four points. Matt King had four points on two goals and two assists. Stephen Kontos won 15 of 19 faceoffs, including all nine in the second half and overtime.

Foley On An Eight-Game Goal-Scoring Streak ... Senior midfielder Shane Foley has scored 12 goals this season, scoring in each game this season and is tied for third on the team with 14 points.  In the last two seasons combined, Foley has scored nine goals with 17 points. He has tallied a point in 14 of his last 15 games. Foley had a career-high three goals and four points last Saturday against Vermont.

With An Assist From Gannon ... Junior attackman Matt Gannon is third in the NEC in assists per game, averaging 1.75 a game. Gannon tied a season-high with three assists last Saturday against Vermont. He has had at least two points in six of eight games this season, and in nine of his last 12 games dating back to 2012. Gannon is 24th in the country in assists per game.

Success At The X ... Stephen Kontos is currently ninth in the nation in face-off percentage, winning 60.4% of his draws so far this season. He won 15-of-19 faceoffs against Vermont last Saturday, including all nine in the second half and overtime. Kontos also tied a career-high with 11 ground balls. Four times this season has Kontos won over 60% of faceoffs in a game.
