Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart takes on Stony Brook for the first time in program history on Saturday as the Pioneers open a stretch of three games in a row against America East opponents.
All-Time Series vs. Sacred Heart... Today's game is the first all-time between the Pioneers and Seawolves. Sacred Heart is 10-13 all-time against members of the America East. The Pioneers are 8-6 all-time against Hartford and also have wins against Albany and Vermont.
Last Time Out... Sacred Heart was tied 6-6 at Providence, but the Friars scored six goals in the third quarter to pull away with the 12-10 win. Matt King led Sacred Heart with a career-high three goals, adding an assist. Cody Marquis tallied three goals for his first hat trick of the season. Matt Gannon had a goal and a team-high two assists. The Pioneers were outshot 41-29, but won 15 of 24 faceoffs. Sacred Heart held a 25-24 edge in groundballs.
It's Good To Be Matt King... Senior midfield Matt King currently leads Sacred Heart with 12 points on the season. He has eight goals and four assists in the last four games. King has tallied four points in each of the last two games, scoring two goals with two assists against Yale and a career-high three goals and an assist at Providence last Saturday. His 12 points this season are a single-season career high, and his eight goals tie a season-high set in 2010.
Foley Filling It Up... Senior midfielder Shane Foley has scored seven goals this season, scoring twice in games at Hofstra and Providence. In the last two seasons combined, Foley has scored nine goals with 17 points. Foley has scored a goal in each of the first five games this season. He also has tallied a point in 11 of his last 12 games.
Marquee Marquis... Junior attack Cody Marquis had a season-high three goals last Saturday at Providence. He has had at least three points in each of the last two games, posting two goals and an assists against Yale. Marquis' hat trick against the Friars was his first game with at least three goals since scoring four in the season finale last season against Quinnipiac.
Success at the X... Stephen Kontos is currently seventh in the nation in face-off percentage, winning 62.1% of his draws so far this season. He won 15-of-24 faceoffs at Providence on Saturday with a team-high seven ground balls. Kontos has won at least 55% of faceoffs in each of the last four games. Last season, Kontos was second in the NEC in faceoff percentage at 57%. That put him 14th in the nation.
Scouting Stony Brook... The Seawolves were picked to finish tied for second in America East in the preseason with UMBC, behind conference favorite Albany. Stony Brook enters Saturday's game with a record of 4-3 after a 13-7 loss at #1 Maryland last Sunday. Three of Stony Brook's wins this season are by two goals or less. Senior midfielder Jeff Tundo leads the Seawolves with 16 goals and 11 assists for 27 points.
