Fairfield, Conn.—Three members of the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team received All-Conference honors earlier today. The trio of Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, N.Y.), Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Oh.) and Ryan Hughes (Bayport, N.Y.) were named to the All-Northeast Conference Second Team.
Ferrino led the team in shots and shots on goal this year with 67 and 39 respectively for a .582 shots on goal percentage. The senior midfielder finished his 2012 campaign with 16 goals and 5 assists. Ferrino completes his four-year career as Pioneer with 35 goals and a .241 shot percentage over 45 games played.
Newbold started all 13 games for the Pioneers in his sophomore season. Third on the team with 40 groundballs, the defenseman netted three goals and recorded one assist. Newbold was second on the team causing 12 turnovers this season.
Sophomore Goalie Hughes, after being named NEC Defensive Player of the Week twice this year, is the final Pioneer getting the nod to the All-NEC Second Team. After getting his first start in the cage in the home opener against Marist, Hughes went on a 11-game streak of double-digit saves. He set a new career-high stopping 16 in the 17-10 loss to Robert Morris and tied it on Senior Night in the 13-9 win over in-state rival Quinnipiac. Hughes finished his sophomore campaign with a 4-6 record.
The Pioneers closed out the season last week with the 13-9 win at home over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Senior Night to end the season owning a 4-9 overall record and just 1-4 against NEC teams.
