Fairfield, Conn.—Seven goals in the fourth quarter boosted the Pioneers to their first conference win in the last game of the 2012 season. Cody Marquis (Londonberry, N.H.) led the forceful Sacred Heart offense having a hand in eight goals with four goals and four assists in the Pioneers' 13-9 win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats. SHU finishes the season owning a 4-9 record.
Both defenses reigned supreme in the first quarter as the game remained scoreless for the first 10 minutes before Quinnipiac's Pat Corcoran dished it to Dylan Webster who netted the first goal of the game. Marquis, picking up his first point of the game, teamed up with freshman Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) for Sacred Heart's first goal of the game and the rookie's first collegiate goal. The Bobcats got one more before the end of the first to head into the second quarter with the advantage.
The Pioneers went to work in the second, outscoring Quinnipiac 3-1. Marquis recorded the first and last goal of the stanza sending Sacred Heart into the halftime break up 4-3.
Sacred Heart's offense was explosive in the final 15 minutes of the game lighting up the scoreboard with seven more goals, four of which came in the final four minutes of the game. Gannon and Mawdsley wasted no time teaming up again to kick-off fourth-quarter scoring picking up another goal just over a minute into the quarter and sending the Pioneers on a three-goal run. With SHU up 9-6, Quinnipiac made a comeback with back-to-back goals to bring them within one. But their run was stunted when the Pioneers had their third three-goal streak of the quarter. The Bobcats scored once more, but it wasn't enough to catch Sacred Heart as the Pioneers picked up the 13-9 win in the final game of the season.
Sophomore goalie Ryan Hughes (Bayport, N.Y.) tied his career-high stopping 16 Quinnipiac shots. Face-off specialist Stephen Kontos (Danvers, Mass.) continued to dominate the X tonight winning 17 of 24 face-offs.
