Pioneers Aim for First NEC Win Against Wagner Saturday

Setting the Scene… The Pioneers are looking to rebound from last week's loss to a tough Robert Morris squad when they head to Staten Island this weekend, while the hometown Seahawks are still in the hunt for their first win of the season.
Last Time Out… A five-goal run in the second quarter gave Robert Morris a huge lead that the Pioneers could not overcome in the 17-10 loss. Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, On.) led the Pioneers with four goals, doing all his scoring in the first half. Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was on fire in the second half, netting three goals for the Pioneers. He along with Shane Foley (South Brunswick, N.H.) and Matt King(Brewster, N.Y.) burst out of halftime to put up three goals for Sacred Heart before Robert Morris' Sean Meagher found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Ferrino added one more before the end of the quarter depleting the gap to just 13-9. After a Ferrino unassisted goal just inside the 11-minute mark, the fourth quarter was all Robert Morris. The Colonials added another three goals in the final six minutes of the game to pick up the 17-10 win.
Pioneer News and Notes… Goalkeeper Ryan Hughes (Bayport, NY) continued his double-digit save streak, stopping 14 in the 11-8 loss to Bryant...He now has made 10-plus saves in eight-straight games...Hughes is third in the NEC in goals against average (10.19), second in save percentage (.531) and third in saves per game (10.62)...Sacred Heart leads the league in man-up scoring, averaging 1.56 man-up goals per game...Sophomore Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) sits atop the NEC in assists, averaging 1.88 per game...Classmate Mike Mawdsley (Inisfil, On.) and senior Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) are tied for first in the league in man-up goals, averaging 0.56 man-up goals per game...Mawdsley is fifth among the league leading goal scorers, posting 19 goals on the year (2.11 pg).
All-Time vs. Wagner… The Pioneers are a perfect 8-0 against the Seahawks since winning the first meeting on March 29, 2000 24-3. Most recently, Sacred Heart defeated Wagner on April 2 last year, again by a large margin, 18-4 on Campus Field.
Last Meeting with Wagner… The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team snapped a three-game slide with an 18-4 win over Wagner to open Northeast Conference play on April 2 of last year. Attack Eric Madigan (Ashburn, Va.), who sat out all of 2010, led the Sacred Heart offense with three goals and two assists in the team's highest offensive effort of the season.
Scouting the Seahawks… Wagner comes into Saturday's game with an 0-11 record, including two NEC loses, after falling to Quinnipiac 15-5 last week. Opponents have outscored the Seahawks 178-70 this season. Wagner is averaging 9.81-goal margin over their 11 games with their greatest loss, 20 points, coming to Hartford. The Seahawks' closest games have been against Virginia Military Institute and St. Joseph's to which they only lost by one goal. They average 6.36 goals and 25.5 shots per game with a .249 shooting percentage.
Around the NEC… The Bryant Bulldogs swept the weekly NEC awards this week. Having a hand in nearly half of Bryant's 17 goals earned Peter McMahon the Offensive Player of the Week honors. The junior recorded two goals and set up six more in the upset of preseason-favorite Mount St. Mary's. Bryant's senior Goalkeeper Jameson Love was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week after adding a pair of wins to his eight-game winning streak last week. In the two wins over Brown 10-9 and Mount St. Mary's 17-9, Love combined for 22 saves, six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kevin Massa earned his sixth Rookie of the Week nod this week. The faceoff specialist won nearly 70 percent of his attempts taken last week to help the Bulldogs go 2-0 on the week. For the week he went 36-for-52 and picked up 20 ground balls.
