Smithfield, R.I.—Aaron Lupo (Schenectady, N.Y.) led the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team with two goals, but it wasn't enough to top the Bryant Bulldogs as the Pioneers fell 11-8 Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs claimed a four-goal lead in the first quarter that they would never relinquish. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 3-6, while the Bulldogs improve to 7-2.
The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Peter McMahon recorded the first two Bryant goals, putting the first goal on the board less than five minutes into the game. His second was the first of three Bryant goals in the final three minutes of the quarter.
After Bryant senior Max Weisenberg got an unassisted goal past Sacred Heart Goalie Ryan Hughes (Bayport, N.Y.) just over a minute into the second quarter, the Pioneers went on the attack going on a three-goal run over three minutes to narrow Bryant's lead to 5-3. Senior midfielder Chris Casey (Duxbury, Mass.) kicked off the run picking up his seventh goal of the season. Lupo and Shane Foley (South Brunswick, N.H.) followed with unassisted goals of their own.
Bryant came out of the halftime break with a 7-4 lead, but did not manage a single goal in the third quarter. Both defenses held tough through most of the period, before Casey dished the ball to Lupo who found the back of the net chipping away at the deficit. Tom Sardelli (Rochester, Mi.) and Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) teamed up to put one more goal up for the Pioneers with just two seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs outscored the Pioneers 4-2 in the final quarter of the game. Bryant leading scorer Colin Dunster recorded three of the four Bulldogs goals in the period, including back-to-back unassisted goals.
The Pioneers return home next Saturday to take on the Robert Morris Colonials.
