FAIRFIELD, CT (March 10, 2012) - Sacred Heart sophomore Mike Mawdsley(Innisfil, Ont.) scored four goals, two man-up, to lead the Pioneers to a 9-6 win over visiting Manhattan College Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers scored five times in the third quarter to rally back from a 3-2 halftime deficit en route to their second-straight win.
The Jaspers (1-4) struck first and built a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter. After being shut-out in their last game at #2 Johns Hopkins, Manhattan's Mike Chilvers ended what would be a 79:07 scorless drought with his first goal of the season to open the scoring. Chilvers made a great individual effort to get to the goal for a 1-0 lead with 1:34 left in the first.
Manhattan followed with the first goals for the season by Jonathan Bourne and Andrew Hurst, both unassisted at 8:54 and 7:33 for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers finally cracked the scoring column at 2:39 of the second quarter as sophomore Cody Marquis (Londonberry, NH) scored the first of three Pioneer man-up goals on the day. Classmate Matt Gannon (Huntington, NY) found Marquis at the far post and he quickly deposited his shot into the back of the cage to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Pioneers (2-3) struck again man-up at 1:07 this time with Marquis setting up Mawdsley for his first. The Jaspers turned the ball over trying to clear and Marquis scooped up the loose ball and found Mawdsley right in front in transition for an easy marker to pull within 3-2 heading into the half.
SHU wasted little time in capturing the momentum to start the second half, as junior Stephen Kontos (Danvers, MA) won the face-off and senior Parker Wilson (Cary, NC) found Mawdsley for his second just 12 seconds into play. Senior Aaron Lupo (Schenectady, NY) gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 9:04 off a feed from Gannon and Kontos followed off the ensuing face-off with his first of the year just nine seconds later.
Gannon and Marquis hooked-up for a second score to close out what would be a 6-0 SHU run. Marquis took a pass at the far post from Gannon behind the net and finished off a quick one-timer for a 6-3 lead with 6:41 left in the quarter. Manhattan ended the run with a man-up goal from Andrew Hurst but the Pioneers would close out the quarter as Marquis scored his third with just four ticks left for a 7-4 lead.
Brett Madarsz pulled his team within two, 7-5, at 13:45 but Mawdsley put the breaks on a possible comeback with two-straight. He hit for his second man-up goal just 39 seconds after Madarasz's score, converting a Marquis pass. His fourth put the Pioneers up 9-5 with 3:13 left to help seal the win.
Over his last three games, Mawdsley has scored 13 of his team-high 15 goals. Marquis finished the day with three goals and two assists.
In goal, sophomore Ryan Hughes (Bayport, NY) turned in his third-straight 12 save performance to claim his second win on the year. Hughes made eight of his 12 saves in the second half to keep the Jaspers at bay.
The Pioneers will be on the road when they take the field again at the University of Vermont on Saturday, March 17th.
