Mike Mawdsley Named NEILA/Turfer Player of the Week
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart rookie attack Mike Mawdsley has been named the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/Turfer Player of the Week for the week ending February 27.
Mawdsley, a freshman from Innisfil, Ont., scored four times, including the game-winner, in a 9-8 overtime win at Marist, Saturday afternoon. His final score of the contest came with just 26 seconds left in the extra frame as he grabbed the ball out of midair, in front of the cage, and quickly snapped it into the back of the net to hand his Pioneer squad their first win of the season.
The lone goal for either side, in the first quarter, came off the stick of Mawdsley as he posted his first collegiate goal to put SHU up 1-0. Trailing 7-5 in the third, he scored again to pull the Pioneers within one and later scored to give them an 8-7 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Sacred Heart (1-1) returns to action with a home contest against Dartmouth on Campus Field at 12:00 pm, Saturday afternoon.
