(Bridgeport, CT) – Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, SK) made 41 saves, but the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team fell just short to Holy Cross 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena.
Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT) opened the scoring with a one-timer from the low slot on a transition feed from Torin Snydeman (Groton, MA) 2:10 into the game. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission, but it was short-lived in the second period as Shayne Stockton tied it 49 seconds out of the locker room.
SHU once again took the lead on a brilliant goal by Drew George (Regina, SK), who took a pass from Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) down the left wing and stick-handled his way inside the defense to get to the net to score his 12th of the season on a glove-side wrist shot under the crossbar. George extended his point streak to eight games with the goal, while Gingera picked up is 99th career point on the assist at 16:21. Once again, Holy Cross stormed back with a game-tying goal 35 seconds later on a near-side wrist shot by Kyle Fletcher in transition at 16:56, with Andrew Cox and matt Clune picking up the helpers.
Andrew Cox scored the game-winning goal at 16:56 of the third, stuffing a centering pass from Kyle Fletcher in for the first lead of the game for the Crusaders. With about seven minutes left, Gingera nearly tied the game curling off the half wall, but his wrist shot rang off the near pipe.
The Pioneers close out the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series with the Army. SHU hosts the Black Knights Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:00 pm, with Senior Night festivities before the game.
