(Storrs, CT) – Alex Gerke led UCONN with a hat trick, and the Huskies scored five power play goals in a 8-3 win over the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team.
Drew George (Regina, SK) put SHU up first just shy of two minutes into the game when Chad Filteau (Regina, SK) chased down a loose puck on the left wing and took it behind the net to find him for a shot from the right faceoff circle. However, the Huskies tied it at 5:33 on a goal by Brant Harris. Steven Legatto helped keep the game tied through one with a number of brilliant saves in a period in which UCONN outshot SHU 19-6.
The Huskies stormed out of the gate in the second, scoring twice in the first 1:09 of the period. Gerke scored his first on carryover power play 37 seconds in, followed by an unassisted goal by Joe Budnick off a Pioneer turnover. Gerke scored one again on a 4-3 power play on a well-cycled play set up by Billy Latta and Sean Ambroise, spelling the night for Legatto who continued to make brilliant saves through much of the period despite the score. He would finish with 29 saves in 32:18.
Cody Sharib added a power play goal at 14:23 and Jacob Poe notched another at 17:48, before Tye Lewis (Vancouver, BC) netted his third of the season set up by Ryan Stanimir (West Vancouver, BC) and Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT) with 1:10 remaining in the period.
Ketchum cut the deficit in half, going to the net to bang in a centering feed from Stanimir off a rush started by Kyle Verbeek (Bloomfield, MI) at 2:08. However, the Huskies seeled the game with a goal by Marcello Ranallo at 7:49 and the third goal of the night by Gerke on the man-advantage at 12:15.
Sacred Heart is next in action in its first of eight home games at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport Tuesdya, November 22 at 7:00 p.m., when the Pioneers host the Yale Bulldogs.
