(Milford, CT) – Sacred Heart returned after a 22-day holiday break with a solid effort against the St. Lawrence Saints, but ultimately fell 5-2 at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 30 saves, including a number of dazzling stops in the second period to keep the game close. Mac Stratford opened the scoring at the 12:45 mark to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. However, Reid MacLeod (Teulon, MB) responded with a two-man advantage goal with 57 seconds remaining in the first to tie the game. He one-timed a feed in the high slot from Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB), with Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) earning the secondary assist.
However, the Saints scored twice in the second period, starting with Matt Dyer's go-ahead goal crashing the net off a goal-mouth pass from Sean Flanagan at the 3:40 mark. St. Lawrence went up two on a short-handed goal by Aaron Bogosian at 8:13 of the second.
Riley Austin snapped in a fourth St. Lawrence goal at the 5:43 mark of the third to make it a three-goal Saint lead. However, Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT) cut the lead to 4-2 with a short-handed goal at 14:03. He crashed the net on backhand pass from Eric Delong (Oakville, MB), with Chris Bailer (Red Deer, AB) earning the secondary assist. Sacred Heart pulled the goalie for the extra attacker with about 3:30 remaining in the third, but after a couple of Pioneer opportunities, Bogosian scored his second goal of the night at 17:49 to seal the victory.
Sacred Heart returns to conference action when they host the Air Force Falcons Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:05 p.m., in a rematch of last year's thrilling Atlantic Hockey Semi-Final win for the Pioneers. SHU will take the on the Falcons Saturday afternoon at 4:35 at the Arena at Harbor Yard as well.
