(New Haven, CT) - Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, but the #3 Yale Bulldogs beat the Sacred Heart Pioneer men's hockey team 5-1 Tuesday night at Ingalls Rink.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on a goal by Chad Ziegler, who stuffed in a shot from the goal mouth during a delayed penalty unassisted at 10:27. On the subsequent power-play that followed, he scored again on a shot from the left wing after the Pioneers were unable to clear, with Broc Little and Denny Kearney assisting. It seemed that SHU would go into the locker room down two, but with 3.5 seconds left in the period, Little made a nifty spin move to sneak a backhander in off a centering pass from Kearney for a 3-0 lead.
Knowlton put the Pioneers on the board in the second with a power-play goal, skating into the offensive zone and firing a wrist-shot from the slot off the blocker of Yale goalie Ryan Rondeau. Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) and R.J. Boyd (Punta Gorda, FL) earned the assists. However, Kearny added a goal off a still, lifting a backhander under the cross bar at 8:21. Jimmy Martin made it 5-1 on the power play, stepping up from the point and scoring on a wrist shot.
The Pioneers played the BuLldogs even in a scoreless third, with Yale outshooting SHU 11-10 in the period. Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 39 saves in the game.
The Pioneers are next in action on Friday, November 26 when they begin a two-game weekend series on the road against the RIT Tigers in a rematch of last year's Atlantic Hockey Association championship.
