About the Pioneers... The Pioneers face the second place team in the Atlantic Hockey Association this weekend after traveling last weekend to Robert Morris to take on the first place Colonials. The Pioneers settled for a 4-4 tie on Friday night, with Robert Morris coming back from down two in the third period to tie the game with 27.5 seconds to play (on the power play and with an extra attacker on). Eric Delong registered three assists, while Chad Filteau and Mitchell Stretch both scored their first career goals. Steven Legatto made 48 saves. Saturday night, SHU fell 5-1, when R.J. Boyd also scored his first collegiate goal.
Scouting the Crusaders... Holy Cross is coming off a 6-2 win and a 3-3 tie last weekend at Canisius. They are led by Everett Sheen (5-7-12) and Adam Schmidt (2-7-9). The Crusaders have jumped out to their best start since the '05-06 season in dramatic fashion, winning three games in overtime. They are dangerous to the final horn, scoring four game-winning goals in the third period or overtime (including with 11 sec. left in OT vs. Army and with 5 sec. left in OT vs. Robert Morris).
Scouting the Black Knights...Army begins a six-game home stand this weekend, hosting AIC the night before Sacred Heart travels to West Point. Andy Starczewski leads Army (2-4-6) in points, while Bryant Skarda's 3 goals are tops for the Black Knights.
Last Time They Met (Holy Cross)... The Pioneers ended the Crusaders' season last year in a 4-3 OT win to complete a two-game sweep of Holy Cross in the AHA quarterfinals at the MIP. Matt Gingera scored 4:53 into OT for the game-winner.
Last Time They Met (Army)... Evan Mladenoff scored twice in a 5-0 win for the Pioneers Jan. 9at the MIP. SHU took three points vs. Army the weekend, with a 3-3 tie the night before.
Berube Leading the Way... Senior forward David Berbube leads the team with three goals and five assists for eight points. He has registered five points over the last four games.
MacLeod Coming Along... Sophomore forward Reid MacLeod is emerging as a dangerous sniper for the Pioneers. Since returning to the SHU line-up four games ago, he has tallied three goals, including two on the power play, and added an assist. His three goals in four games already equal to the three he scored in 23 games last year as a freshman.
Lots of Rubber at Legatto... Sophomore goalie Steven legatto has made the second most saves in the AHA (315). He has faced at least 40 shots four times this year, and faced 50 shots on goal twice.
