East Hartford, Conn. – Members of the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team took part in the Whaler Hockey Fest press conference at Rentschler Field Wednesday afternoon, marking 100 days before the nine-day outdoor hockey attraction in which the Pioneers will play the University of Connecticut Huskies on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
Head Coach C.J. Marottolo, Captain Patrick Knowlton, and Assistant Captains Evan Mladenoff and Eric DeLong were on hand for photo opportunities in which all the participating teams were represented. Sacred Heart and UConn will lead off a number of college games to be played throughout the Whaler Hockey Fest.
"The team is really excited about it," said Knowlton. "It's a great venue, hopefully a lot of fans out there. We grew up playing on the ponds, so this is the closest thing to it here in Connecticut."
As extraordinary as the circumstances will be playing outdoors at Rentschler Field, the game against UConn is also a regular season conference game with two points on the line in the Atlantic Hockey Association standings in the last two weeks before the playoffs. "I think it's going to great to play UConn here ," said Mladenoff. "It's a big rivalry here in Connecticut. It's going to be a great game, period. To play UConn here makes it all the better."
The Whaler Hockey Fest is hosted by Whaler's Sports & Entertainment, and will feature numerous high school and college games, including an Atlantic Hockey Association match-up between Army and AIC on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Other college hockey games include the Connecticut women vs. Providence College and the Trinity College Men's and Women's teams hosting their counterparts of Wesleyan University.
