Garcia Rounds Out Play in NCAA Regional
GREENSBORO, NC (May 21, 2012) - Sacred Heart senior Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) finished tied for 61st overall at the 2012 NCAA Championship Regional in Greensboro, North Carolina over the weekend.
Garcia posted a three-day 54-hole score of 232 on the Grandover Resort East Course. He carded a 74 and 75 on the first two days of play and posted an 83 during the final round. The event was played on the par 72, 7,271 yard course from Thursday through Saturday.
Liberty won the event by three strokes over the University of Florida. Liberty posted a score of 868 and advances to the NCAA Championship at USC. Robert Karlsson finished in a three way tie for the individual title at -3 with Matt Schovee of SMU and Vaita Guillaume of Campbell. Karlsson moves on with his team to the championship round.
Campbell's Viata Guillaume defeated SMU's Matt Schovee in a one-hole sudden-death playoff to claim the individual spot for the NCAA Championship. Guillaume carded a par on the par-4 10th hole and Schovee recorded a bogey. Liberty's Robert Karlsson was not involved in the playoff, as Liberty advances as a team to the NCAA Championship.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional advances o the finals. The finals are scheduled for May 29th through June 3rd at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, hosted by the University of Southern California.
Garcia posted a one-stroke win at the NEC Championship by posting a 54-hole score of 219 at this year's championship tournament at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Florida to earn his way to the NCAA Regional. Garcia carded even par 72's on Friday and Saturday and 75 during Sunday's final round to take home medalist honors.
