MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Senior David Renski (North Stonington, Conn.) led the field throughout the two-day New England Championship and won with a tournament-low score of 142, while the Sacred Heart University men's golf team finished second.
Renski shot identical one-under par 71s to finish two-under for the weekend at the par-72, 7,244-yard Newport National Country Club.
As a team, the Pioneers led by five strokes after the first day of competition with a score of 295. In the second round, SHU shot a team score of 297 to finish at 592 and fall two strokes back of the winner, Central Connecticut (590).
Sophomore Joshua Salah (Gloucester, Mass.) finished second for the Pioneers and placed tied for fourth overall. At the end of the first round, Salah was in second with an even-par 72 and finished the Championship with a 75 in the second for a two-day total of 147.
Fellow junior Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) rounded out the competition for Sacred Heart with a 155 (78-77).
The Pioneers are off until the Northeast Conference Championship in Celebration, Fla. between April 29 and May 1.
