R-Freshman Gregory Ibe (Queens, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Football Co-Rookie of the Week announced on Tuesday afternoon. Ibe shares the season's first NEC rookie honor with Bryant freshman wide receiver Jordan Harris.
Ibe's first game in a Pioneer uniform resulted in 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The New York City product averaged 6.1 yards per carry in Sacred Heart's season-opening 28-25 road win over Marist. After a scoreless first quarter, Ibe became the first Pioneer this season to find the end zone as his two-yard TD plunge gave SHUa 7-0 advantage 11:35 before halftime. The rookie running back reached pay dirt again in the final minute of the third quarter. Bouncing off tackle, Ibe ran eight yards for a touchdown that put the Pioneers' lead at 28-7.
As a team, the Pioneers piled up 227 yards on the ground en route to the season opening victory. SHU returns home this weekend for their Northeast Conference opener against Robert Morris. Kickoff on Campus Field is scheduled for 12 noon. Fans can catch all the action with live video, audio and stats through Game Central.
