Five Pioneers Earn All-Conference Honors; Sacred Heart Fencing Program is Combined NFC Champion
(Fairfield, CT) - Northeast Fencing Conference Commissioner Elliot Lilien recently announced the Conference's All Star Selections. Team Captain Stuart Holmes was named to the Conference's foil first team for the second consecutive year. He made the All-Conference second team as a freshman. Freshmen foilist Jonathan Jacovino was named to the All-Conference second team. Justin Dion and Michael Fenech were named to Conference first team in epee. This is the fourth straight year that Dion has earned first team All – Conference Honors. In saber, Marty Williams also was a first team selection for the fourth consecutive year. Holmes and Williams will represent Sacred Heart at the NCAA Championships this coming week.
"This is a great accomplishment to have over half of our starters make the All-Conference teams this season," comments head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "We also had two additional fencers (Andrew Holmes in foil and Jeremiah German in epee) miss the All-Conference team by percentage points. Justin, Stuart and Marty once again showed this season that they were dominant performers. It was very satisfying to have Mike Fenech and Jonathan Jacovino also get recognized."
It was also announced that Sacred Heart University and Brown University tied for the combined Conference Championship. Both programs sported 20-2 combined mens and womens records this past season, with the SHU men going 10-0 and the women 10-2. Brown's men were 9-1 and their women 11-1 this past season. "I am very happy that our women are also being recognized for the fine year that they had in the Conference," said Dr. Vrabel. "Their victory over Vassar with Elena Tringa sidelined was a great accomplishment and secured our first ever combined title. Since we only lose two starters from our entire fencing program to graduation, I look for Sacred Heart to again be in contention next season."
The Pioneer's season will conclude with Megan Floyd from the women's team joining Stuart Holmes and Marty Williams at the NCAA Fencing Championships at Ohio State. The women's competition will be held on March 22nd and 23rd with the men's completion occurring on March 24th and 25th.
