Williams, Holmes and Dion Earn First Team All Northeast Fencing Conference Honors

(Fairfield, CT) - Three Pioneers were named to the Northeast Conference's First Team, announced by Northeast Fencing Conference Commissioner Elliot Lillien on Thursday.  Junior Marty Williams, junior Justin Dion, and sophomore Stuart Holmes all made First Team.

Williams posted a 25-3 record and edged out Brown's Ted Weller (also at 25-3) for first place on indicators (best touches scored vs. touches received ratio).  This is Marty's third consecutive year as a first team all league selection.  Dion was also a first team all league epee selection for the third consecutive year with the second best conference record (25-4).  Joining Williams and Dion on the first team sophomore foilist Stuart Holmes, who had the third best foil record at 23-6.  Stuart just missed being a first team selection as a Freshmen, placing fourth last year and earning second team honors.  Sophomore Epeeist Jeremiah German just missed repeating as a second team selection, missing the sixth spot by one victory.

The selections are made based on the best winning percentage  providing that the fencer competed in at least two thirds of the possible bouts.

"This is a great accomplishment for all three of these athletes," said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel.  "The dominance shown by Williams, Dion and Holmes was crucial in our repeating as undefeated Conference Champions this season.  Our league is very competitive and every year over half of the teams have a legitimate chance at winning the title.  It was very comforting to know that this trio would consistently come through for us.  Their performances inspired the rest of the team and made our success possible.  I look forward to all three of them being contenders for all league honors next season."
