FAIRFIELD, CT (January 16, 2012) - Sacred Heart r-junior Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT) was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week announced by the league on Monday. Gibson takes home his first award this season and shares this week's honor with LIU Brooklyn's Julian Boyd.
Sacred Heart junior guard Shane Gibson might have the hottest hand in the NEC right now. The league's leading scorer in conference play with 25.2 points per game through six contests, Gibson kept that average nearly four points better than the next player by scoring 27.5 PPG and helping the Pioneers to a 1-1 record this past weekend on the road. In SHU's 71-68 win at Saint Francis (PA), the Killingly, CT native dropped 26 points and showed off his defensive skills, stealing the ball a career-high five times and grabbing five rebounds. He then exploded for 29 points and led a late comeback attempt at Robert Morris, falling just short, 70-67, in the final minutes. Trailing 60-50, Gibson keyed a 17-7 Pioneer run with three of his seven treys to help knot the game at 67-all with 2:37 to play. For the game, he shot 7-of-11 from distance and added four assists and a pair of steals. Gibson has assumed the overall NEC scoring lead at 20.3 PPG, and ranks third in three-point percentage (.450), fourth in made three-pointers (2.6 per game) and free-throw percentage (.836), and ninth in field goal percentage (.513) and steals (1.3 per game).
Gibson and the Pioneers return home to start a four-game homestand on Thursday night against NEC rival Quinnipiac.
