(Cancun, Mexico) – Nine different Pioneers contributed points, led by a career high 16 for freshman guard Steve Glowiak (New Britain, CT) in a 78-71 win for Sacred Heart Men's Basketball over Hampton University Tuesday afternoon in the Cancun Challenge at Moon Palace Resort.
After four lead changes in the first half, the Pioneer bench led SHU to a 15 point lead at halftime, outscoring the Pirate non-starters 21-8 in the first and 33-22 in the game. SHU shot 58.1% from the floor in the first half, including 8-14 (57.1%) from behind the arc through the first 20 minutes. Evan Kelley (Norwalk, CT) hit one of those threes to beat the buzzer going into the half with an off balance shot contested by a Hampton double team .
Hampton cut the Pioneers lead to as close as three twice, but a big field goals by Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, CT) with 13 minutes remaining gave the Pioneers separation. Glowiak hit a three with about 11 minutes left to squelch another Pirate run.
Glowiak went 6-9 from the floor for the game, including 4-7 from three-point land. Five Pioneers scored in double figures, including 13 from Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT) and ten each from Justin Swidowski (Cinnaminson, NJ), Chris Evans (Stamford, CT), and Kelley.
With the win, the Pioneers advance to the championship game of the Mayan division, where they will face Lipscomb at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
